Introduction
BTEC level 3 Applied Science is aimed at students who want to develop their skills in Science, in preparation for progression into employment or higher education. It is a very appropriate qualification for students who have studied GCSE Applied Science or BTEC Level 2.
Units covered will include a selection from:
• Fundamentals of Science
• Working in the Science Industry
• Scientific Practical Techniques
• Physiology of Human Body Systems
• Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques
• Practical Chemical Analysis
• Medical Physics Techniques
Three units will be followed in the first year of study and three in the second year.
Further Details
It is a very practically based subject, which is entirely assessed through assignments rather than examinations. Students preferring a more examination approach to assessment should consider separate Science A levels as an alternative.
Progression Options
Students follow three units in the first year to gain the Certificate (Equivalent to an AS level). Three further units are followed in the second year to gain the Subsidiary Diploma (Equivalent to an A level). This would provide a good foundation for progression directly into employment or to higher education to follow a Science related course – alongside other appropriate Level 3 qualifications. It would be particularly appropriate for students looking to working in Science based industries.
