EXAMINATION RESULTS: SUMMER 2011
459 years of academic excellence continues with King Edward VI College students, staff, parents and governors celebrating the superb examination results this summer.
King Edward VI College, one of the few institutions in the country to win two awards in the Good Schools Guide this year, is an established specialist sixth form college with a strong tradition for GCSE and A level examination success. Record numbers of students were entered for A Level examinations this year and last year’s high success rates have been maintained whilst there is a significant improvement in the number of students that gained higher grades.
The success of the students has been spread across the whole range of subject areas. Proof of this is that 25 out of 39 subjects have pass rates at A level of 100%.
A level results were particularly strong in Applied Health and Social Care, Design and Technology, Economics, Electronics, English Language, English Literature, Environmental Science, Film Studies, Further Mathematics, Geography, Government and Politics, History, Information Technology, Media Studies, Music, Philosophy, Physics, Sport & Physical Education, Performing Arts and Spanish.
32 students achieved A* grades at Advanced Level and the College acknowledges the excellence displayed by our students including Bethany Venus, James Korolewicz, Melissa Jones, Alana Gadsby, Bethany Turner, John Chhetri, Jonathan Allred, Daniel Stokes, Dean Zachary, Sarah Howard, William Bourne, Kelly Ward, Ruth Jesson, Thomas Hewkin and Michael Rees. Of particular note is the achievement of Michael Rees who not only completed 4 A levels with top grades, including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further mathematics but is probably the only student in the country who has successfully completed all of the additional optional maths modules and papers. Michael’s mathematical achievement is even more remarkable as he hardly dropped a mark in any of the exam papers he took.
Amongst the top scorers are A level students Joshua Mountford, Pip Goodman, Ashley Cooke and Lucy Finch gained straight As across all of their A level subjects. Our congratulations to Sara Howard who achieved A* grades in all of her A levels: Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics. We are particularly proud of the success of John Chhetri who achieved 4A* grades in Chemistry, Physics, Electronics and Mathematics and Dean Zachary who achieved 4A* grades in Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Electronics. Bethany Venus achieved an impressive 5A* grades in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Further Mathematics and is one of 33 King Edward students who gained grade A* or A in all their subjects.
King Edward VI College is delighted that, with these results, the vast majority of students will be in a position to progress to the University or employment of their choice with strong career prospects.
First year students who gained top marks in all of their subjects include Samantha Cooper, Mathew Parker, Paul Callendar, Liam Barkes, Harry Orchard, Scott Warin, Adrian Maye, Steven Brotherhood, Kathryn Parkins, Joanna Quigley, Rajesh Rai and a foreign exchange student Ylva Vognild, who came from Norway and stayed with a family in Nuneaton.
The Principal, Dr Esther Maughan said “These results are well-deserved by staff and students and reflect their hard work. King Edward VI is a special place which provides the supportive environment that students need to achieve great things. One of the secrets to our success lies within our students. We have no bullying or poor behaviour, our students are keen to learn and respect and help each other to achieve success. We employ specialist teachers and other experts so that the preparation for University applications and interviews are second to none! Increasingly, we are finding that students are willing to travel from outside of our area to take up places within a sixth form college.”
Nuneaton’s King Edward VI College is one of 93 sixth form colleges in the country. As University places become more competitive, sixth form college students have a distinct advantage over others as not only are sixth form colleges recognised as the highest performing institutions nationally but also sixth form colleges prepare students well for University acting as a half way house between school and University.
Dr Maughan comments “The dropout rate is negligible from the sixth form college student population because of the way our students are supported and prepared for University life. We teach students how to cope with the freedom and independence that Universities provide.”
