Introduction
Have you ever wondered why it is women, and not men, who tend to do the bulk of the housework and childcare, why in every town and city there are both wealthy and poor neighbourhoods, why overall girls achieve far better exam results than boys, why religion seems to be declining, or why the police tend to target young rather than older people? If you have then Sociology might well be the subject for you. This course aims to arm students with the knowledge they need to give them a deeper and more critical appreciation of contemporary societies.

Subjects that link particularly well with this course are English, Psychology, Health and Social Care, History and Politics. To be successful in this course students should have an interest in contemporary social issues. Discussion is an important part of this course so students with strong opinions are welcomed, althoughstudents must be prepared to have their views challenged.
Progression Options
Students who are successful at AS level usually enrol for the A2 level qualification where we study Beliefs in Society and Crime and Deviance. From here higher study, perhaps at degree level in this or a related area, is a possibility. As part of a wider programme the course provides an excellent basis for progression to any career or university course. Sociology will support a career in a wide range of areas, including human resources, social & welfare work, police, local government, advertising and management. The analytical skills developed in this course are particularly valued by employers.
