Introduction
The WJEC Media Studies specification is designed to allow media students to draw on their existing experience of the media and to develop their abilities to respond critically to the media. It enables students to explore a wide variety of media, including digital media technologies, drawing on the fundamental concepts informing the study of the media: texts, industry and audiences. The specification also encourages creative work to enable students to gain a greater appreciation of the media through their own production work and to develop their own production skills. At A2 in particular, students are given the opportunity to research a topic that then forms the basis for their production, thus encouraging them to create productions informed by an awareness of contemporary media issues.

Media Studies is designed to encourage candidates to: (i) enhance their enjoyment and appreciationm of the media and its role in their daily lives. (ii) develop critical understanding of the media through engagement with media products and concepts and through the creative application of production skills. (iii) explore production processes, technologies and other relevant contexts. (iv) become independent in research skills and their application in their production work and in developing their own views and interpretations. We have a dedicated Apple Mac Media suite as well as specialist editing equipment and a Music Recording suite. Students will also get the opportunity to work alongside HNC students on their productions. Film and Media students are offered the opportunity to take part in our annual residential trip to the Edinburgh Film Festival. Students can also take AS Level Communications and Culture and undertake an Extended Project to enhance their studies.
Progression Options
Students who are successful at AS level may wish to complete an additional year to achieve the A level qualification, from which higher study perhaps at degree level in this or a related area is a possibility. As part of a wider programme the course provides an excellent basis for progression to any career or university course. Media Studies will support a career in a wide range of areas, including Media Production and Journalism. Studying Media Studies alongside English would be a strong combination for careers in any media related field. Students can also progress onto our HNC Film and Television Studies course
