Every year we recruit a number of students who fulfill our minimum entry criteria of 5 grade Cs at GCSE level and in a typical year around 70 students need to re-sit either GCSE English. Our College GCSE English pass rate this year is way above the national averages at 70% and has clearly bucked the national trend. However many young people nationally and locally have achieved a grade D at GCSE English when previous performance would have suggested that they would have obtained a grade C. It is disappointing but we will provide every opportunity for confident students to sit the examination with us in November as well as in January.
The OfQual report into this summer's GCSE English results is attached for those who wish to read the detail and here is a summary.
OfQual have found that the correct grade boundaries have been applied in the June exam series and will, therefore, be taking no further action over this summer's results. Their investigations have found that the boundaries used in January were, in their words, 'generous' and their view is that schools were over reliant on the January 2012 grade boundaries, particularly in relation to written controlled assessment. Their investigation showed that the June boundaries have been properly set. A 'one off' opportunity to resit in November is being offered by some of the awarding bodies (normally resits are only available in January) and have OfQual have made a series of recommendations to avoid a repeat of this situation. We will apply the usual appeals procedures if we still have concerns about particular students’ grades.
