Counselling is a hit at college
Counselling courses at King Edward VI College are proving to be very popular with both current daytime students and adult learners.
Eight daytime college students all devoted extra time to gain the Introduction to Counselling Skills qualification alongside their existing A ‘level subjects.
Teacher Jane Brown said “The course looks at fundamental skills required for counselling. The students have shown such dedication. They have all taken this subject on top of their chosen A ‘level subjects as they know it will help with their future plans for University or a career.”
The course is accredited by the CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body) and involves 30 hours study in total both on site and personal study at home.
Mature student and mother of two, Laura Keen from Hinckley has just completed the course as well as studying A’level Ancient History, Health and Social Care and GCSE Maths. Laura said “Picking the counselling course was an easy choice for me as I have always been interested in other people’s thoughts and feelings. I also realised that the qualities such a course could give me in both the employment and education market.”
Laura went on to say “I chose to come to King Edward College because they were really friendly, they listened, they did not judge me on my past qualifications and they were willing to give me a second chance which these days is rare. I had phoned around one or two other colleges but all they were concerned with was money, KEC’s wasn’t like that.”
Last year King Edward VI College also opened its doors to adult learners in the evening.
The Level Two Certificate in Counselling Skills runs on a Thursday evening. The current group consists of people from all walks of life, with an age range from 24 to 72, from midwives to the retired; the course is suitable for anyone who has an interest in learning more about empathy, questioning, listening and much more.
Joedie Trott a family outreach worker from Leicester said “My learning journey since committing to complete the Level 2 Counselling skills course has been life changing. I believe I have become a true person to myself that mirrors onto the work I carry out. I’ve already signed up for Level 3. Let the journey continue!”
The Level 2 course is now coming to an end; however the students have the opportunity to continue their studies as the college has now been approved to run the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Theory.
“These qualifications can be used to underpin many paths of employment; caring, support workers, working within schools as mentors, volunteering within agencies. After successful completion of both Level 2 &3 you can apply to go onto Level 4 Diploma.” says teacher Jane Brown.
The college is currently taking applications for September candidates for all counselling courses. If you are interested in finding out more please contact King Edward VI College on: 024 76328231or e-mail:
