A recent article in the Sunday Times highlighted the success of Sixth Form College students in achieving the new A* at A level. There are 17 Sixth Form Colleges in the list of the top 60 performing institutions. The article said: “The real surprise, however, was where these A*s are awarded. It was not mainly the selective well-known independent schools (they got under half of those awarded to the “top 249″), but the sixth form colleges. Selective state schools (not that there are many left) also scored well but there were hardly any non-selective state secondary schools in our list. That means that hardly any of them have what might be called critical mass. So if you want to study A levels at a high level with like minded folk, you’d better pay for it (via the independent system) or hope to born in a local authority that selects pupils at 11 or has introduced sixth form colleges.”
