The course explores and develops students’ skills in performance and examines employment in the performing arts industry. Students will work on acting and drama skills including physical theatre devising and text based projects. Students will also be able to explore additional disciplines such as dance, music and singing although this is optional. Students are expected to take part in and create real events of a high standard open to the public. Performing Arts is a vibrant and visible department and students are at the centre of college life. This exciting course is based at a full working theatre and students will have access to fully equipped theatre spaces and rehearsal rooms as well as working on site specific and touring productions. Through a unique collaboration with the George Eliot Fellowship Students will have the opportunity to work on an originally commissioned play as part of the International Literary Festival.
All teaching staff in the Performing Arts department have worked in the industry and provide a realistic learning experience In addition you will be learn through Professional Practice, Master Classes and visiting industry professionals and theatre trips.
The AS course explores and develops skills in performance. In year 2, students will be able to develop and extend these skills, either in the role of performer or as part of the production team. Employment opportunities and pathways into industry will be investigated. This is an exciting, dynamic and challenging course that on occasions will require students to work outside normal college hours. Students can also take AS Level Communications and Culture and undertake an Extended Project to enhance their studies.
The course is an excellent foundation for progression to a performance/drama related degree or a theatre based career. Performing Arts is a growing sector of the economy even in this challenging economic climate. This course is ideal for developing important life skills useful to employers in the majority of professions, including self confidence, the ability to work as part of a team, motivational skills, time management and independent learning.
